quiet office at Vermont Timber Works...

It's been a quiet week so far at Vermont Timber Works. Lot's of follow up and searching for new leads in the sales department. We are raising a timber frame in Jamesport Long Island this week for John Mazur. Dan, Rick, Mikey, Jason, & Toddie are on the job. Peter and Doug are in the office and seem to be much quieter with out Dan and Rick around...not sure what that implies! James, Kellin and MJ are in the shop working on the Artzt Project. They are handcrafting decorative heavy timber trusses in eastern white pine. Here's the shop drawing, a very pretty and delicate truss design.
With any luck, I'll have some photos of these trusses soon. Here are some progress shots from the shop. The finish is Minwax Winter White, perfect for a beach house don't you think?

The finials have a few coats of the winter white on them, which is needed to seal them.
Kellin is working on the layout, timber arches are next! James is cutting and MJ is in charge of sanding, chamfering and finishing.

The next stage will be putting these decorative timber trusses together, as we are shipping them out fully assembled.

Timber Frame Raisings by Vermont Timber Works

Let's raise your timber frame! You have watched your project progress from the idea stage, drawings and design, engineering and now it's time to raise your timber frame. The raising is the most exciting part (in my opinion). At Vermont Timber Works we do not erect all of our timber frame projects, but we do quite a few.

  • Lake Taghkanic West Bathhouse, Taconic, NY

  • Katonah Memorial Park, Ancram, NY

This in just in the past 3 weeks, I guess you could say that we have been busy. It's ALL good though.

Timber Frame Raisings Coming up:

NOW would be the time to contact Vermont Timber Works if you are considering a hand cut and crafted timber frame project THIS YEAR. 802-886-1917

Vermont Timber Works contracts GMH Transport for all of our trucking needs. GMH covers the US and Canada and is wonderful to work with.

Timber Frames, Post & Beam Homes and BARNS / Questions & Answers

At Vermont Timber Works we receive many requests for information regarding our timber frames. How much do they cost? (more than conventional) How long does it take? (3-4 months) Will Vermont Timber Works raise the frame? (of course) Can my general contractor handle the raising? (maybe) Why is your hand crafted better than a machined timbers? (if you want custom, you want hand crafted) So many questions! Well, we don't mind the questions and are happy to provide answers. This way you can decide for yourself if our high quality, hand crafted timber frame is right for you.

Raising another timber frame....at the Olana Wagon House!

The boys are in Husdon, NY this week, raising another frame! The Olana Wagon House Project, at the Olana State Historical Site. I found a video on youtube, check it out. Very interesting place, and a very interesting man, Fred Church. http://youtube.com/watch?v=aIDHGSUsk90

Initially we were invited to work on this project because of another historical barn that we did.......The Walt Whitman Barn. LOVE those referrals.

Contacted by the Architect, Bud Motzkin of Pokorny Associates, we came up with some ideas and budgetary estimates for their review. Keeping in touch is key while waiting for the project to bid. Zandri Construction Corp was awarded the Olana Project and Greg chose us as their timber framer.

Here is our shop drawing.......to give a feel for our scope...more pictures soon!

look at that joinery, mortise and tenon with hard wood pegs (cut flush).

Charney Timber Frame Raising / Post & Beam

just a few progress shots taken by ME. The Charney's are very happy with their timber frame barn and were with us the whole time. Look at the view! Raising the frame once the bents are put together on the ground is just amazing. Our crew enjoys doing it, and it shows.

This finished post and beam timber frame in located in beautiful Wilmington, Vermont.
