Chapel for Holy Apostles Heavy Timber Construction

Above is a rendering of the finished timber chapel. Enjoy a few progress shots from the raising!

Hang on Mikey! Oh my...

The timber arches are glulams, proudly created and supplied by Alamco Wood Products. Arches blend nicely with the natural douglas fir.

Looking up, see the little tree? It's tradition!

Heavy Timber Frame with Timbers and Columns

Heavy timber construction in Katonah, NY. Douglas Fir Timbers with an FSC specification (because forests matter) and beautiful turned columns that taper. Take a look.
Rick, with the help of Ruby, Kellin and Mike, created 4 of these turned columns. Starting with a 16" diameter turned column and reducing it to 12". The taper creates a smooth transition from the base to the trusses. Great job Rick!
Vermont Timber Works and CREW will be raising this timber frame next week. Look for progress shots from the job site soon.

Thank you Peter Camilli & Sons for choosing Vermont Timber Works as your custom heavy timber framer. Architect George Rosamond has been wonderful to work with, we thank you George. See you soon!

Busy at Work...

Busy is an understatement!

From Sue and I in the front office, Rick's estimating, Doug and Peter on design & engineering.....Vermont Timber Works is hopping. Timber fills the shop (right Dan?)! Spruce Peak Lodge is partially to blame, check out this complex timber frame...we are thrilled to be building this.
The Douglas Fir Timbers that will be used to create this fantastic timber frame came partially from Starfire Lumber (thank you Dan @ Disdero)

Post and Beam, Timber Frame in 3D

Our clients not only get 3D drawings during the shop drawing phase, they also get a 3D rotatable frame design.....so they can see their timber frame like we see their timber frame, and while it's still on paper and easy to make changes! We find this tool is very helpful, especially for our residential clients.

Heavy Timber Construction is Beautiful.

Professional photo's have arrived! Thank you Robert McKendrick!

This project is in Barrington, Illinois. It is a group of post & beam gazebos, shelters, pavilions, an amphitheater and a warming shelter and gathering room made out of douglas fir timber. We used galvanized steel joinery on the project.

Thanks again to Brian and Ed at Stuckey Construction, Tom and Dave at Williams Architects and Williams Construction Management. We look forward to more timber framing with you!

Glue Laminated Timber vs. Natural Timber

We recently bid on the Mammoth Cave Visitor Center in Mammoth Cave, KY. We bid as an alternate to the glulam frame and offered a full FSC Certified Natural Douglas Fir option. Not chosen in this case, it was considered and approved by the architects on the project. Cost was an issue, our DF option was a bit higher. Oh well, we don't get them all. Best wishes to Martin Construction, as they are the awarded GC and we appreciated their consideration.

Although certain projects lend themselves better than others. For instance, sometimes due to the design or span, natural timber will not work and a glulam or two needs to be incorporated. For example, the arch on the Grove City College job needed to be a glulam, but the remaining is natural Douglas Fir.

Initial design in all glulam our natural timber alternate was chosen on the Carl M. Small Project. These trusses are so beautiful, we look forward to going back down for finished shots. Sarazin General Contractors and our team worked well together. Below is our truss!

Zimmerman Frame......Post and Beam Construction

Kennebunkport, ME, raised by our crew in September 2007.

Working with Bob Anuszewski of Pine Tree Post & Beam we were able to create this frame for John Zimmerman. Beautiful Douglas Fir Timbers planed & chamfered with 2 coats of clear satin poly to let the natural color through. LOOK at those curved braces!

Look for updates as this project progresses.......Foard Panel is supplying the stress skin panels.

Installation went well with Foard's crew, this picture is courtesy of Mr. Zimmerman!

We have many more residential timber frames shown on our site!
