When you have a jeep, you park where you want! right MJ? At Vermont Timber Works, we get our hands on some fairly large beams.

Maneuvering them around makes for interesting parking arrangements.

These beautiful and LONG douglas fir timbers will be leaving our shop and arriving in Fishkill, NY next week. Vermont Timber Works crew will be building a heavy timber frame for the Fresh Air Fund. THIS is what we will create:

Road Trip! Doug and I went to meet with Ev, John and Ben @ Pizzagalli. We are working with them on the Stowe Mountain Lodge, Phase II, Building D heavy timber trusses.

Well, we could pass up heading over the Spruce Camp base lodge and taking some photos...here they are...

Great room? YES maybe! One of the greatest I've seen :)

Steel joinery was needed as you can see. Double chorded scissor trusses created an 80ft span.

H eavy timber construction and peeled poles...that is what we are working on for the Camp Hayden project in Fishkill, NY. This doulgas fir log will be peeled and fabricated into a support column. Any guesses on the size of this?

Full size crew cab and full size bed, 5th wheel hitch for hauling hand crafted timbers (when a full GMH Transport Truck is needed) and of course, hauling our job trailer full of timber framing tools. I think the guys approve.

This pellet stove keeps the Vermont Timber Works front office area nice and warm...we love it. With heating options so expensive, we hardly ever need to turn on the electric baseboard heat.

Doug working on design and shop drawings, Pete working on the engineering of each timber frame project (Fresh Air Fund Camp Hayden this week & next) and Rick in our estimating department enjoy the 2nd pellet stove that was added last year. The way our office is set up, one stove was just not enough. And after too many instances of coats on most of the day and trying to type with gloves on...the 2nd pellet stove was added.

Look out Campton, NH here we come. Dan wanted to come with, but there just wasn't room in the sardine can. Maybe next time.

Vermont Timber Works doesn't always have a pre-install job site meeting, but it seemed to be needed for the White Mountain Administrative Complex Project. Coordinating the steel supports for our heavy timber trusses and Rick did find a few things that needed to be tweaked, so time well spent.

Rick and Rob (P & S Construction) discussed where we would be building the trusses, how the install would flow and where the crane would be. Plan is to be back during the week of 12/1.

Lunch at The Common Man in Ashland, NH on the way back was also time well spent. Thanks for buying Vermont Timber Works.

Day 3 with the crane and this beautiful heavy timber frame barn is almost finished. I hope to have many pictures to post shortly.

Dan and Rick surprised the crew on the job site this morning with fresh bagels and donuts. I'm sure the boys were happy about that!

and our Vermont Timber Works CREW is raising the horse barn this week. Although it was a bit chilly loading and unloading the truck on last Friday, the weather this week has been quite nice. Today will be in the low to mid 60's.

Megan is on the job site capturing photos and videos for us and for the client. Doug stopped by on his way into work and 2 bents are UP and progress is being made.

Two lucky horses, possibly tennesee walkers will enjoy this timber frame barn.

Stunning Church with Heavy Timber Construction

The Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield, MO. Vermont Timber Works hand crafted the heavy timber trusses for the chapel area. Notice the steel tie rod, needed for strength. Although these douglas fir arched trusses are very pretty, they are also structural. (As we put it, they are holding up the world).

The Vermont Timber Works CREW traveled to Missouri, assembled and set these breathtaking trusses in place. Let us pray.

Vermont Timber Works welcomes September and a busy fall schedule. As we wrap up the heavy timber projects in the shop (Rich Barn, Ayers Trusses), many are on their way (Blackwood Barn, Blackwood Residence, Hacker Valley, White Mountain Admin, Neely Residence) and some are in the engineering and shop drawing phase (Westbrook Middle School, Cox Natatorium, Notre Dame Academy).

Leaves are begining to change, but searching for new heavy timber construction projects has not. Travis and I (and perhaps a 3rd) are finding much to bid on. Currently Rick's desk is full of timber frame projects that need estimates. Welcome Centers, Park Pavilions, Commercial Timber Buildings and Residential Projects. If the project mentions heavy timber, we are all over it!

Finally, our first and probably our last barbecue of the 2008 summer season. It takes quite a lot to get this timber framing crew together and on the same page. Right Tom?

quiet office at Vermont Timber Works...

It's been a quiet week so far at Vermont Timber Works. Lot's of follow up and searching for new leads in the sales department. We are raising a timber frame in Jamesport Long Island this week for John Mazur. Dan, Rick, Mikey, Jason, & Toddie are on the job. Peter and Doug are in the office and seem to be much quieter with out Dan and Rick around...not sure what that implies! James, Kellin and MJ are in the shop working on the Artzt Project. They are handcrafting decorative heavy timber trusses in eastern white pine. Here's the shop drawing, a very pretty and delicate truss design.
With any luck, I'll have some photos of these trusses soon. Here are some progress shots from the shop. The finish is Minwax Winter White, perfect for a beach house don't you think?

The finials have a few coats of the winter white on them, which is needed to seal them.
Kellin is working on the layout, timber arches are next! James is cutting and MJ is in charge of sanding, chamfering and finishing.

The next stage will be putting these decorative timber trusses together, as we are shipping them out fully assembled.

searching for commercial heavy timber projects

Many of the commercial heavy timber project leads are found by searching. Our sales team spends quite a lot of time searching for new projects. We use Reed Construction Data, Dodge Construction, Bid Clerk and Construction Wire to name a few.

Heavy timber commercial work typically falls under division 06130, division 6131, division 06170 or division 06180. However we are not always listed in the 06 specifications...even if there is heavy timber in the project. SO, we need to be inventive and persistent on our searching and research.

The Vermont Department of Economic Development (Joanne) stopped in yesterday. We had a very informative meeting and look forward to her help in gaining access to more government bids.

The Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield, MO is one of the prettiest churches I've seen. Take a look at the dark scissor trusses in beautiful douglas fir timbers.

The main chapel area continues with dark stained douglas fir timber trusses. This arched truss design is gorgeous and the steel tie is needed for strength.

Rick, with the help of Ruby, Kellin and Mike, created 4 of these turned columns. Starting with a 16" diameter turned column and reducing it to 12". The taper creates a smooth transition from the base to the trusses. Great job Rick!

Gorgeous Heavy timber construction, currently under way at Spruce Peak in Stowe, VT. Take a look!
These double chorded douglas fir trusses span 80 feet and the octagonal design is quite something. See the ring truss? Lots of steel joinery in this one! The Engelberth Crew contracted Vermont Timber Works to coordinate the design of this project as well as the fabrication and assembly of these fine trusses. Engelberth is setting the trusses and doing a great job. NICE progress shots guys, thank you!

Once the layout is finished, the fabrication begins. Below is Mike, he's been working with Vermont Timber Works for quite some time now.

Planed and Chamfered Douglas Fir timber beams are sanded, then are ready for a sealer.

Helmsman Spar Urethane in a satin sheen is chosen. 2 coats are applied in our shop, great job Justin!

These trusses are ready! 3 Trusses in front are shipping to the Clay Pit Ponds Park NEW Visitor Center, Staten Island, New York. Trusses in beautiful Douglas Fir timber were fabricated and fully assembled in our shop. Steel joinery as you can see.

The timber used needed to be FSC Certified and Fire Treated, thank you Disdero Lumber for offering both.

The Scissor Trusses behind will soon be going to the Grace Episcapal Church in Amherst, MA. (expect more pictures of that project!)

Glulaminated Timber & Natural Timber

Sometimes the combination of natural timber with laminated is just what is needed to get the job done...like in this case. Trellis work for the Lake Taghkanic Bath House in Taconic, NY.

Theses beautifully done glulam arches are made from douglas fir. Sometimes a glulam beam is needed due design loads and/or shape. If you look closely, you can see the lamination seams. We thank Alamco Wood Products. Working from our shop drawings, they created the wooden arches.

The glulam arches will connect to natural douglas fir timbers with steel joinery. The end result, I'm sure, will be gorgeous. (don't worry, I'll post pictures)!

When I first heard that word I was working with Crown Point Cabinetry and the timber framer across the way had just purchased one. He wanted us to come over and see it......okay.....why not? Well, the hundegger is a quite impressive CNC cutting machine. Little did I know at that time that I would have a career change coming and would learn much more about timber framing.

As fate would have it (and great timing) I found my way to the Vermont Timber Works team. At Vermont Timber Works we do not have a Hungegger, and that's okay. Our crew handcrafts every frame to suit the particular needs of each client. Using classic timber framing tools like framing chisels, mortising machines, beam saws, peg drills, slicks and more.

So, if you are looking for something original and handcrafted just for you, call us.

Timber Framing can be Chilly Work...in Vermont.

Especially today, the coldest day of the season, so far that is. Our shop does have some heat, but when it's this cold, the guys really need to bundle up.

Luckily we are not raising a frame in this below zero weather! Looks like the next project being raised by Vermont Timber Works will be the Lake Taghkanic Bathhouse in New York State. (January 2008).

Each year over 6300 students from area schools get to visit Billings Farm, including my children. It's a wonderful place!

Perfect for a winter ski vacation or just a long weekend any time of year....The Trapp Family Lodge and Villa's in beautiful Stowe, Vermont is one of our favorite post and beam vacation spots. They have heavy timber construction through out the lodge.

We worked with architects The Burley Partnership, Engineering Ventures and Engelberth Construction to build this beautiful modified hammer beam timber frame for the von Trapp's of 'The Sound of Music' fame.

The project consisted of commercial timber frames for three new conference halls, and custom ceiling beams for luxury rooms in a major new wing. Once again, Vermont Timber Works did the raising. We are chosen quite alot to raise our frames, but not always. We are happy either way.

Beautiful Timber Frame Church Addition with Arched Beams

This was an addition to the 139 year historic church. The Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield, MO. Here are some finished pictures.......scroll down for some fun installation shots! Douglas Fir Arched Timber Trusses in the Parish and Scissor Trusses in the Cloister. This project received the "Project of the Year" for 2007 from the Springfield Contractor's Association.

Dan, Doug and Rick remember how hot it was during this timber truss assembly and raising. These beautiful Douglas Fir Timber Trusses span over 52ft. Yes, that's right, I said 52 feet!

The general contractor was Morelock-Ross Builders out of Springfield, MO with David Ross as the project manager. Mark Trask was our main contact on job site, as the job super. The interiors are by Jeanne Waters-Hill of Touche Design Group. Architects on the job, Marshall-Waters-Woody Associates, Inc. project architect Ed Waters and project manager Mark Cummins. Mark also gets credit for sending all these great photos, thank you Mark! The trusses were fabricated, assembled and installed by Vermont Timber Works (of course).

This Navasota, TX Church was devastated by fire. We were chosen for the rebuild.

Notice the existing truss on the far wall, we matched it. Our Modified Heavy Timber Hammer Beam / Scissor Truss.

Installing the first truss...quite a moment.

Here is our crew in the midst of the raising. Working with Guide One Tayler Ball Construction and engineers Duferane-Henry (now Stantec) everything went smoothly.

We are very proud of our involvement with the Vermont Veteran's Cemetery timber frame chapel. Located in beautiful North Randolph, Vermont. Both of my parents are buried here and the pride that you feel when visiting is overwhelming. The views are breathtaking, it's a perfect spot. This project is in Barrington, Illinois. It is a group of post & beam gazebos, shelters, pavilions, an amphitheater and a warming shelter and gathering room made out of douglas fir timber. We used galvanized steel joinery on the project. More info in an earlier blog.....
